Walk on the Dunes

One thing you must do while at Great Sand Dunes National Park is walk on the dunes. One of the many wonderful things about Great Sand Dunes National Park is that it is so easy to visit. Once you enter the park, drive past the visitor center and then turn into the one main parking lot.

Sand surface temperatures can reach over 150° F on summer afternoons; plan to hike early morning or evening in summer months to avoid burned feet and potential heat exhaustion. If you must walk on the dunes on a summer afternoon, be sure to take boots or tennis shoes (sandals are not adequate) .

Although the weather is hot, you do not want to be riding the dunes in shorts. As with the tank top, wearing shorts is asking for trouble if you get into an accident. We recommend wearing pants that are breathable yet provide you with the protection you need to ride the dunes.

The most ideal time to search for sand dollars is during low tide or morning hours. However, morning is most ideal as mid-afternoon low tides combine with high winds, which creates choppy water, thus flip flopping sand dollars every which way.
